Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac earned a second-place finish today in the tough conditions at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
He leaves Atlanta, Georgia with a healthy 53-point lead in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross 450SX Championship with just three rounds remaining.
Heavy rain in the early hours of the day postponed track activities and shortened the schedule to just one qualifying session. Tomac got off to a good start for round 14 of the championship, qualifying fourth, then rode another strong run in his heat race to finish second in the tough track conditions. The red plate holder got off to a good start in the main event and quickly moved up to third, but was dropped to fifth on that opening lap. Tomac put his head down and moved back into second place with five laps to go. His 11th podium finish of the season puts him within striking distance of clinching the title as he holds a 53-point lead with just 75 points remaining on the table.
“It was a really tough track that changed all the time and was very difficult throughout the day.” Tomac said. “In the morning it was really slippery and then it slowly recovered, but it was still a tough running track.”
“I made a few mistakes at the start of the main event, and that caused me to lose contact with the lead, but I was able to have a good second half of the race and fought hard to finish second on the podium. So it was a solid and good evening for the championship.
