BRANDON Mootoo was the fastest man on the water when the TT Jet Ski Association (TTJSA) held its first circuit race of the year at the San Fernando Yacht Club on Sunday.
The TTJSA was formed in early 2020, but soon after the covid19 pandemic forced jet ski enthusiasts to put a stop to events.
On Sunday, entrants returned to the water in four classes – the modified 1800cc supercharged, stock 1800cc supercharged, non-supercharged 1800cc and the 1000cc class.
Men and women competed side by side.
In the supercharged modified 1800cc class, Mootoo won the overall standings ahead of Shawn Marshall.
The fastest jet skis are in the supercharged modified category traveling 90 to 95 miles per hour.
In the supercharged stock, Garvin Naipaul got the better of Ronnie Rambally to win the category.
In the non-supercharged category, three rounds went before the winner was crowned. Darren Sinanan won two of the three rounds and took the overall winner title.
Shane Maharaj, who won the third and final moto, finished second overall.
Shannon Sookoo was third after all three runs and Alvin Maharaj was fourth.
Competitors in the 1000cc class also competed over three rounds.
Chloe Sinanan beat Martin Lezama in every round to win the overall title.
TTJSA President Steve Ghany Jnr said: “My dad Steve Ghany Snr was involved in powerboat racing and he got me involved in jet ski circuit racing.
Ghany, who got involved in the sport in 2003, said he had a “genuine love and passion” for the sport.
Ghany thanked title sponsor Sky Energy Drink and its committee for organizing the circuit’s first race.
“It’s racing, it’s sportsmanship and everyone has to have fun,” Ghany said.
It aims to have monthly runs through November.
“The next race is scheduled for May 29. Every month there are races and we organize a championship prize-giving (at the end of the season).”
