Colin’s Crest is the Slam Dunk rally racing competition

Colin McRae was perhaps the most legendary rally driver of the modern era. After his tragic death in a helicopter crash in 2007, rally organizers searched for a way to honor the Scottish champion. We think they’ve found a perfectly fitting tribute: Colin’s Crest.

Located towards the end of the VargÃ¥sen stage of Rally Sweden, Colin’s Crest is an extremely gnarly jump. Each year, the rally organizers measure the distance each competitor has traveled over the ridge, with the winner receiving the coveted Colin’s Crest Award.

This year’s winner was Mads Östberg, who launched his Citroën C3 WRC a whopping 42 meters above the jump. It was a massive theft.

Everyone in the top ten looked huge; the first three all hoisted their cars 40 meters or more:

But the most annoying of all was Thierry Neuville, who almost made a corkscrew out of his Hyundai. He didn’t make it into the top 10, but he managed a jump that seemed impossible.

Co-pilot Nicolas Gilsoul, who was briefly watching the ground pass under his window on the passenger side, was not afraid to admit on Twitter that it was a pretty scary moment for him:

While Östberg’s 42-meter jump won the title this year, it was not an all-time record. That honor goes to Eyvind Brynildsen, who launched his Ford Fiesta R5 Evo an outrageous 45 meters in 2o16.

Yeah. Rally racing continues to be the craziest and most impressive form of racing.
