Great weekend at Saratoga Race Track

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (NEWS10) – Fans have walked through the gates of Saratoga Racecourse for the first weekend since 2019, after last year’s racing season had no spectators due to the pandemic.

For some, like Joyce Meyer, the return to the track is in the continuity of a tradition dating back several decades. Meyer has been traveling from Pennsylvania for almost 40 years, remembering what keeps bringing her back to Saratoga.

“I think seeing the new 2 year olds coming in, they are so exciting to watch. I fell in love with Easy Goer in 1989, saw him when he was 2 and watched him throughout his career, ”she said.

Meyer has been on the track every day this year since opening day because she says it’s a great feeling to continue on a trip she loves to take, especially after last year.

“You start to feel the cabin fever, you start to feel isolated, it was just wonderful to be with people and to be able to do something that you love,” she explained.

This year’s opening day saw nearly 28,000 spectators, with 27,760 fans on the track. It’s a big boost for the track, as well as for downtown businesses.

“The opening day was eventful. It was, everyone was dizzy, it was happy. People were buying hats by the dozens and dozens, ”said Natalie Sillery, owner of Saratoga Trunk.

Saratoga Trunk, a women’s fashion store, is usually very busy during runway hours.

Sillery and other business owners are hopeful that a successful athletic season can help provide a boost after the hardships caused by the pandemic.

“The trail employs so many different people, it helps so many of us in the retail business and the city needs the sales tax,” she said.

With New York dropping COVID restrictions, the runway will be open at full capacity throughout the summer.
