McLaren announced its entry into the Extreme E off-road electric championship earlier this year, with the question of its option to enter Formula E still unanswered. At least on the Extreme E side, his role is really strengthening now with today’s announcement that the former rallycross driver, Top Gear United States Hollywood host and stuntman Tanner Foust will be his male racing driver.
All Extreme E teams have two drivers who share the car throughout the time trials. So far, there has been a real mix of experiences, from rallycross to touring car racing, the W series and Formula E, and uh, Jenson Button has even taken a lap. Foust brings a lot of experience to this segment, having mostly made a career out of the way. And if McLaren wants to increase his fan base in the United States, it’s much easier to put someone like him in Extreme E than in Formula 1.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has made no secret of the fact that he hopes to attract new fans with Foust, as part of today’s announcement.
“We are delighted that Tanner has joined the McLaren Racing family of drivers,” said Brown. “He’s a first-class off-road competitor with a wealth of experience and a winning track record. In addition to his driving prowess, he’s a fantastic personality, who will help us connect with new fans around the world and help us connect with new fans around the world. bring the purpose and important messages of the Far E to the forefront. “
Given that the group recently took steps to sell its Applied Technology arm, while also acquiring a controlling stake in its IndyCar partnership with Schmidt-Peterson, it appears to be making a concerted effort to focus more on the United States. . And why wouldn’t it be, when there has been such a growth in audience for F1 there?
McLaren’s entry begins from the 2022 season, when Extreme E is set to relaunch its global electric odyssey. The schedule is yet to be confirmed (and even this year’s one, like all series, has had a few hiccups), but Foust said he was looking forward to the challenge. “Being able to race for McLaren is every driver’s dream and the opportunity to compete for the team in this innovative and imaginative racing series makes it even more special.”
“The concept is unique and the challenge captivating,” added Foust. “This will allow me to use all my experience and skills while being part of a positive cause addressing key issues for our planet and our society. “
Who will share the car with Foust will be announced in the future, and she will be McLaren’s very first female driver.
