Practicing doctors and professional rally racers, a formidable combo indeed, and that’s not all. Dr Deepti Pruthvi and Dr Shivani Pruthvi are a speed-loving mother-daughter duo who were part of India’s first all-female racing team. They are also the country’s premier mother-daughter rally racing duo. Shivani, 23, and Deepti, 51, from Devangere, Karnataka, are the most beloved couple on the rally race tracks. The two made a foray into this supposedly male-dominated arena and won several races.

A graduate of the MBBS from the SDM College of Medical Sciences, Shivani is part of the first all-female racing team in India. His mother Deepti, also a medical practitioner and professor at the SS Institute of Medical Science & Research Center, is Shivani’s co-pilot and navigator for rally races. His parents firmly believed that Shivani needed extracurricular activities in life to balance the rigorous course in medical school. Seeing the way she crosses curves and hurdles, her father, BS Pruthvi, who was a rally driver in Bengaluru in the 90s, thought she could become a professional driver.

He began to mentor and train Shivani while his mother wanted to be his navigator. Deepti also underwent rigorous training which prepared her both physically and mentally. Deepti wore a seven-layer suit and had to sit in an unventilated room to get used to the conditions inside the car. Both being doctors, they adapted very well to the racing conditions. They are used to wearing protective equipment and clothing in hospital and during medical procedures.

Shivani was 19 when she competed in her first competition, Autocross, in Kochi. The same year, she joined the Indian All-Women racing team, Ahura Racing, and won pole position in the Volkswagen India Ameo Cup. They made their debut as a couple at the 2019 South Indian Rally driving a Mitsubishi Cedia in the INRC3 class. They were also the only all-female duo to compete in the first round of the Rally Championship held at Madras Motor Racetrack in Chennai. Shivani and Deepti felt that despite the predominantly male sport, their comrades still cheered them on on the slopes. Shivani, who is currently preparing for his postgraduate studies, takes time to train on weekends, holidays and a few days before the race.
