Rally races hit the mountains this weekend, first for Kentucky

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – The very first rally race arrives in the state of Kentucky this weekend. Backroads of Appalachia brings NASA Rally Sport for the first Raven Rock Rallye. The event will take place Friday and Saturday atop Pine Mountain on 119 and Kingdom Come State Park.

The series will shake cars on Friday before opening the weekend’s first official event to the public. Cars and stars will be at Square on Main in downtown Cumberland with live music from 7 p.m.

The race begins on Saturday, giving spectators two seats to take part in the action. You can watch at Kingdom Come State Park or atop Pine Mountain.

“On the 119 side, we’ll have a live DJ all day. The vendors for the food setup and the drivers will come for a setting where you can spend time with the drivers and the cars and tell them about their experience, ”said Erik Hubbard, Director of Backroads of Appalachia.

The weekend ends Saturday in downtown Whitesburg with more live music and trophy ceremonies.

Letcher County and Harlan County executive justices Terry Adams and Dan Mosley are working with the group. Plans have been put in place for social distancing.

Terry Adams says the counties are thrilled to support an event that has a lot of potential.

“It’s something that could lead to more events in the future and have an economic impact on the region,” Adams said.
