YOUNG sailors from the Draycote Water Sailing Club (DWSC) took the helm of their first event.
The club hosted the eighth and final event of the Midlands Topper Travelers Winter Series, with 28 junior sailors traveling from across the region to compete – and the racing team was made up of junior club members.
Ethan Cheshire, 17, who was shortlisted for the Rugby Sports Awards 2022 Young Volunteer of the Year, was the main race officer, assisted by fellow 17-year-olds Ted Ball and Youth and junior Commodore Millie Irish.
DWSC sailor Joe Rowe reveled in the windy conditions, winning the first three races by a considerable margin.
Second, also by a fair distance, was the club’s Jess Powell. Jess nearly got the better of Joe when she led for most of the fourth and final race, but Joe passed to put in a clean sweep.
The results meant Jess won the Traveler Series overall and Joe finished second. Oscar Rowe, Joe’s younger brother, finished second in the smaller Topper – a popular youth racing dinghy – in both this event and the series.
The trio, along with other sailors from the Topper club, will travel to the World Championships on Lake Garda in Italy this summer.
